Abstract

The precise diagnosis ofthe developmental stage of breast câncer is criticai prior to treatment
and for the decisions regarding conduct. The prognosis of the patient may, therefore, be estimated
based on severaI factors, among them the status of the axillary lymph nodes and angiogenesis
of the primary tumor. Angiogenesis is a process that allows the formation of new vessels that
originate from the preexisting vascular network. It is a complex mechanism that leads to a partiy
known angiogenic phenotype that involves biochemical, molecular, genetic, and cellular alterations.
In view of the existing discrepancies in the literature as to the vaiue of the antigenic markers
of the endothelial cells in the primary carcinoma of breast and the absence of national studies,
this research evaluated the roles of antibodies for cluster of differentiation (CD34) and vascular
endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the identification of angiogenesis ofthe primary carcinoma of
the breast, with prospects on the possibility ofthe existence ofmetastases ofthe axillary lymph
nodes. Sixty-two patients were studied with primary invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast
submitted to either radical surgical intervention or conservative axillary lymphadenectomy. The
expression ofthe CD34 and VEGF markers were studied and correlated with clinicai and laboratory
variables with emphasis on the axillary lymph nodes. The obtained results do not allow inferring
the existence ofmetastases in the axillary lymph nodes prior to the operation.
