Clinical and psychological characteristics of women with moderate to severe mastalgia treated with gamma linolenic and linoleic acids
Keywords:

To evaluate response of moderate to severe cydic mastalgia to treatment with gamma
iinoienic and linoleic acids (EFA), using Cardiff Breast Score (CBS), within a non randomized
clinicai triai, an anaiysis was made of 30 patients, seen at the Mastology Outpatient C/inic of
Oswaido Cruz University Hospital from February, 2001 to July, 2002. Patients received verbal
advice and began treatment with EFA for three months. CBS degrees of response to treatment
were determined according to mastalgia eva/uation byana/og visual scaie (AVS). At the end of
treatment, 22 (73.3%)patients were responsive and 8 (26.7%)provedunresponsive. A/though
there was no statistical associa tion, it was found that women o ver the age of29, with mastalgia
of/ess than six years'duration, menarche before 13, non-nuliiparous, firstparturition over the
age of22 and up to six months' iactation; patients who stated it was not their first visit to the
mastologist as those who regarded themselves as irrita ted, depressed or stressed beca use of
mastalgia, most frequentiy experienced a complete or partia! reduction in pain after treatment.
The condusion was that EFA appeared to be effective in cydic breast pain and to be a good
choice as a flrst-line drug.
