COUNSELLING FOR WOMEN WITH HEREDITARY RISKS OF BREAST NCER: A GUIDE FOR BREAST SURGEONS

The hereditary predisposition to breast tumors is responsible for 5% to 10% of ali
cases of this neoplasia. Most of these cases is due recently to the mutations in two
genes denominated BRCA-1 and BRCA-2. However, in spite of the low incidence of
these tumors, cumulative risk of these women and their relatives for developing breast
carcinomas and ovary malign neoplasia it is higher than the general population. Through
an appropriate couselling we can identify women with high risk of inheriting this
susceptibility, and give them further orientation. By molecular tests available, today
it's possibly, to stratify their risk more precisely. Recent development of chemoprevention
of mammary tumors will in the future modulate this risk pharmacologically for those
women's benefit. This present study discuss the basis of the genetic predisposition,
couselling and the alternatives for the prevention of breast câncer in these patients.
