Abstract

lary lymphadenectomy for the treatment of breast carcinoma can benefit the
patient only if there is lymph nodes metastasis. Methods used to evaluate lymph node
status were inefficient in he majority of cases invasive carcinoma. The search for the sentinel
lymph node has presented a high negative predictive value (NPV). Aknowledge of its use
and limitations is important. Objective: The analisis of various techniques to search for
sentinel lymph node (SLN). Method: 81 cases of breast carcinoma were studied with
clinicaly negative axilla. Of these, the dyeing technique was used in 36 cases, the probe
tecnique was used in 6 cases and 39 both tecniques were used simultaneously. A total
axillary dissection was done in every case, except for two. Results: The SLN was found in
74 cases and of these, 35 with axillary metastases. There were two false-negative results. Of
the 36 cases where the dyeing tecnique was used, the SLN was found in 32 cases and of
these, 21 presented axillary metastases and there were one false-negative results. The SLN
was found in ali 6 cases using the probe tecnique, two had axillary metastases and there
were no false-negative results. The SLN was found in 36 of the 39 cases using the two
different tecniques. In 34 cases it was found by the two methods and there were one falsenegative. In the other 2 cases there was a disagreement between the two methods and of
these, two were false-negative (these two cases are contained in the first six using the
probe). Conclusion: The predictive negative value of the SLN is very hight in the different
tecniques and will be used as a method to avoid axillary dissection in certain cases.
