Abstract

With the purpose of stablishing the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis, one hundred cases of breast lumps with clinical hypothesis of fibroadenoma were reviewed retrospectively, after beeing excised as an outpatient procedure, between january 1988 and january 1991. The clinical diagnosis of fibroadenoma was more frequent between 20 and 30 years of age (47,0%). There was a clinical accuracy of 84,5% in patients under 30 years and only in 50,0% over this age (p< 0,005). Two cases of carcinoma were excised as fibroadenomas. The authors conclude that, specially after age 30, all propedeutic methods (aspiration citology, mammography, ultrasound) should be used in making such a diagnosis, because there was a greater number of failures in the clinical diagnosis in this age.
