Abstract

Study of 269 patients treated by unilateral mastectomy for cancer of the breast and followed by mammography and clinical examination throughout 1988.

Physical examination and mammographic evaluation were avaiable in all these patients surgicallyy treated at the Francisco Gentil Institute (Portugal, Lisbon).

In 18 cases pathologically confirmed carcinoma of the remaining breast was found. Physical examination and mammography demonstrated carcinomas in 9 cases and the remaining 4 cases were detected by mammography alone. We have analysed the accounts for mammographic failures.

The authors studied the role of breast self examination and his close clinical supervision in all the patients with remaining breast.

It was concluded that more agressive monitoring of the second breast by frequent self examination, mammographic evaluation before therapy and annual mammographic check up may achieve early detection of second breast cancer in patients under observation.
