Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the acceptability and compliance of women to the breast cancer screening program implanted in the Cariri Western region of the state of Paraiba, Brazil. Methods: A retrospective
study was performed involving 5.198 women from sixteen municipalities of the Cariri Western region of
the state of Paraiba, attended atthe Women Health Care Center ofMonteiro, and submittedto imaging
tests (mammography and complementary ultrasound) between January 2001 and December 2005. Тo
evaluate the acceptability and adherence to the mammography, it was used the number of women enrolled
in the program peryear ofthe period studied; the annualaverage of women submitted tofirst mammography, as well as the mammographic covering rate per 100,000 women, according to age and populationestimations from IBGE for the region municipalities. Results: The 7.537 mammograms corresponded to
an average of1.4 mammograms per woman. The annual average of thefirst mammogram was of 1039.6
+ 747.5 women. In 2002, 300 women were enrolled in the program and, in 2003, 1.918 women, one
observing a reduction in that number in the subsequent years. Among the 300 women enrolled in 2002,
only 0.66% were submitted to the annual screening during the period studied. The mammography population covering rate was equal to 31.8% for women in the 40-49 years age group, and equal to 35.9%
for women in the 50-69 years age group, varying according to the different municipalities. Conclusion:
These results requirefurther studies to deepen the political and sociological issues involved in the actions of
breast cancer detection, in order to investigate, among other things, the reasons for non-responsiveness of
women to mammographicscreening, the difficulties ofthe health professionals in addressing the standards
for mammographic screening recommended by the Ministry of Health and, finally, the regional political
commitment related to the women's health.
