Breast câncer in young women: a study on the probability of disease-free survival

Introduction: The breast câncer is uncommon, but not rare, in young women. However,
the psychosocia/ impact of the disease and its treatment have important considerations,
controversies remaining about the disease evoiutionai prognosis in these women, speciaiiy
because differentresuits in reiation to disease-free survivai or overaiisurvivaiare referredto in
iiterature. Objective: This study was heid with the objective to know the probability of diseasefree survivai in women with breast câncer with the age equai or inferior to 35 year over the
time. Method: A descriptive study ofthe cases series type was heid from a data survey ofthe
handbooks of 105 women with breast carcinoma assisted in the Mastoiogy Service of Carmeia
Dutra Maternity in Fiorianópolis-SC from November, 1987 to December, 1999, with foiiow-up
untii Juiy, 2001. The free-survivai anaiysis was done for disease-free survivai and the Kapian Maier method was used. Resuits: Average patients' age was 31.7 years. At the end of the
foiiow-up period, 52.4% of patients were aiive without disease, 20% were aiive with disease
and 25.7% ha d died. The probability of disease-free survivai in five and ten yea rs were 56.1 %
and 22.4%, respectivety. Conciusion: Women carriers of breast câncer, with the age equai or
inferior to 35 yea rs ha ve the probability of disease-free survivai after the diagnosis of56.1% in
five years and 22.4% in ten years.
