Abstract

O propósito do presente estudo foi o de analisar, sob o ponto de vista da paciente, os
efeitos biopsicossociais associados ao diagnóstico e ao tratamento do câncer inicial da mama,
em 103 mulheres. Tratamento conservador foi empregado em 34 delas, e em 69 pacientes,
mastectomia radical modificada. Os dois grupos receberam radioterapia pós-operatória.
Pertenciam aos estágios clínicos I e II e foram analisadas a partir de 24 meses após o tratamento
inicial. As pacientes tratadas conservadoramente se sentem menos mutiladas, mais satisfeitas
com o resultado estético, e mais atraentes do ponto de vista sexual. Adaptação marital e
social, função sexual e o medo da recidiva são encontrados em igual proporção nos dois
grupos. Aconselhamento psicoterápico deve ser oferecido a todas as mulheres tratadas por
câncer de mama.
