ACCURACY AND IMPACT OF LARGE-CORE NEEDLE BIOPSY ON THE FOLLOW-UP OF NON PALPABLE BREAST LESIONS

Abstract

Breast câncer is the leading cause of câncer deaths in women. The greatest impact in
reduction of breast câncer mortality is due to the increasing number of women attending
to screening mammography and achieving early diagnosis (stage 0 and I). Therefore, there
is a increasing number of breast biopsies caused by the indeterminate mammographic lesions. Aiming the reduction of surgical breast biopsies, the large-core needle biopsy is being used to evaluate nonpalpable mammographically detected lesions without decreasing
reliability, reducing the costs of health care, and helping planning the therapy. Our goal was to study the accuracy of large-core needle biopsy on non palpable breast lesions and
its cost-effectiveness on the follow up of the patients. The pathology results from biopsy
and from open surgery were compared. 97,6% of the results were concordant, and 95,8%
of concordance in cases of malignity. Large-core needle biopsy cost represented 41% of
the cost of open surgery. Large-core needle biopsy is an accurate method in diagnosis of
non palpable breast lesions, being a cheaper alternative than open surgery.
