Node negative breast câncer: evaluation ofprognostic factors and immunohistochemical markers (estrogen receptor; P53 and HER-2)

High incidence, devastating consequences on mental and organic hea/th and high morta/ity
rates characterize breast câncer as a serious world hea/th prob/em. The heterogeneous aspects
ofthe disease associated with poor prognosis have encouraged the study of pathoiogicai and
biological factors which allow us to understand the behavior of breast câncer better. Nodenegative breast câncer patients ha ve presented a higher o veraii survivai rates when compared
to node-positive patients. However, approximate/y 30% of node-negative patients have
presented worse prognosis associated with câncer recurrence. Fifty-four node-negative patients
have been retrospectively evaiuated for clinicaiand pathoiogicai data and correiated to estrogen
receptor, tumor suppressor gene P53 and oncogene HER-2 expression. The average age ofthe
women was 57 years (range 25-80) and the average tumor size was 3.42 cm (range 1-20).
Associations between severa! anatomic, pathoiogicai and immunohistochemical factors have
been analyzed and statistical significance was observed between tumor size and morta/ity,
tumor size and incidence of metastasis, histoiogicai grade and estrogen receptor expression,
tumor suppressor gene P53 expression and estrogen receptor expression, disease free survivai
(DFS) and histoiogicai grade, DFS and incidence ofmetastasis, DFS and P53 expression, overall
survivai and tumor size, and overall survivai and incidence of metastasis.
